“Soft Time,” in computing terminology, is defined as “being or relating to a system that is ideally real-time but in practice can tolerate some latency” As a designer and maker of often “one-off” objects, the concept of soft time pretty accurately describes my relationship to deadlines. A flexible approach to time is often necessary due to the unpredictability of the problem-solving and making process. In the case of my clock,
I was fortunate to meet the deadline, but the literal meaning of soft time is maintained through the supplesilicone materiality of the clock itself.
